These functions are worth exploring when trying to
producecreativeportraits.However,theywillhavelimited
useinmost commercialenvironments, astheoutcome is
relativelyunpredictable.Againinthiscaseafewshotsmay
need to be captured before the final piece is realized.
Although unpredictable, the uniqueness of these images
will set them apart from the norm of static and
over-controlledimagesandshouldbeencouragedfortheir
creativity.


ƒ-stop (focal ratio)

In its most basic form the aperture value controls the
amountoflighthitting thefocal plane.Inlowerlighting
situations the photographer may choose to use a wider
(lowernumber)aperturevalueto allowgreater lightinto
thecamera.Similartreatmentmaybegivenwhenlightis
particularlygoodand asmaller (highernumber)aperture
value is used to constrict the light levels entering the
camera.


The photographer must comprehend the great influence
overtheimagethatthechosenaperturevaluecanimpart
uponthefinalimage,byunderstandingthewayinwhich
each value can control the way the light is channelled
throughthelenstowardsthefocalplane;thiswilldictate
the depth of field within the image.


In changing thesevalues ateither end of the scale (for
example ƒ2.8 v ƒ22) and shooting the same scene, the
