Inaperfectexposurethephotographerwillendeavourto
achieveagoodrangeoftonalvaluesacrossthescale.
Howeverthisisofcoursedependentontheimagebeing
taken. For example if an image is taken and has a
predominantly lightertonal rangethe histogramwill be
weightedtothatsideofthescale,withthesamebeing
true of animage with darkertones.Thephotographer
mustthencompensateandunderstandthatthisiswhat
the camera is seeing, and is not wrong.


However, where the photographer must be careful is
whenthehistogramstartstoapproachtheedgesofthe
scale,whereanyareasoftheimagethatareoverexposed
orunderexposedwillbeseento‘clip’orriseupagainst
the outer edges of the histogram, and detail will be lost.
