When we take the opportunity to expose our children
to the glory of God displayed in a rainbow or
powerful ocean waves or a star-studded night sky, we
are helping them understand that there is a Being
much bigger than themselves who created the universe
and holds it together with His power. When we tell
them about our answered prayers and those amazing
“coincidences” that confirm God’s presence in our
lives, we help them realize that God is close and
caring and active in our daily circumstances.

5. Come to Him as a Child


Jesus said in Matthew 18:2–4 that unless we come to Him as a
child, we will never really know Him. But how does a child
come to God?


Sitting on the hard, wooden, oak bench in our little church in
Salt Lake City, Utah, I remember responding to an altar call one
sunny Sunday morning at the church my family went to when I
was around three years old. All I can remember from that
special Sunday morning is the unexplainable love I felt for God.
I wanted to be with Him, and I wanted Him to know how much I
loved Him.


In my three-year-old mind, I thought the best way to let God
know how much I loved Him was to be brave and walk up to
the front of the church and let my pastor know that I loved
Jesus. So I did. I was completely abandoned for God at the
tender age of three. I wanted all of Him, and I wanted Him to
have all of me. I was sold out. I knew He loved me, because I
