JULIA SYRZISTIE
BA Communication design
Glasgow School of Art
http://www.juliasyrzistie.cargo.site

Julia Syrzistie’s work combines
illustration, printmaking and
graphic design. Her project,
Recast is a visual exploration of
the Doves typeface. “Thought to
be destroyed at the beginning of
the 20th century by its disposal
into the River Thames, the
typeface managed to survive on
the riverbed over 100 years,”
Syrzistie says. “By 2014, it was
recovered and made into a
digital font. This project explores
the materiality of the story, with
replicas of the type cast to
portray its journey in an
illustrative way.”

SEAN LAST
BA Graphic design
Edinburgh Napier University

Sean Last loves work that “allows
you to play with materials,
colours and mediums. I find
that’s when you create
something unique.” But the
most important lesson he
learned on his graphic design
course has been “resilience: the
ability to trust in your creative
vision, but also being able to let
it go”. It’s an approach he applied
to his project, ACCENT: a
speculative visual representation
of Scotland’s identity on the
international stage. “It uses
dance as a creative metaphor for
the fluidity and ever-evolving
nature of identity, and promotes
a more inclusive vision,” he says.
