D&AD’s brief was make the BBC
Sounds app stand out in the
storytelling landscape, dominated by
Audible and Spotify. Kenneth Meek
and Marianne Johansen’s solution was
to upload the BBC’s entire library of
audio-described TV programmes to
the Sounds app. In a nutshell, this was
storytelling without visuals, and it
netted them a D&AD Black Pencil.
“We love work that solves
problems,” says the duo. “Every brief
has a different solution: sometimes
that’s an ad, sometimes a new product
or feature. That’s a challenge, and that’s
why we love being creatives.”

Sicen Kuang got a lot out of her BA:
“We were free to experiment with
different types of fields, which enabled
me to explore a huge range of
concepts,” she says. Her project,
Magical Menagerie, Lost In Iceland, is a
series of pen and ink illustrations
showing a fantastical journey through
the Nordic nation, based on her own
travelling experiences. “The unique
natural beauty gave me the inspiration
to create a magical menagerie, filled
with a variety of different animal
habitats of my travels.”
