Constance Read may have
completed her graphic
communication design course
at Central Saint Martins, but
she’s sticking around to spend
an extra year there as an
artist-in-residence.
Her project Bacteria is about
turning ugliness into beauty.
“I grew bacteria swabbed from
my body and my apartment in
petri dishes at home,” Read
explains. “After looking at them
under a microscope, I drew
abstract designs of the different
bacterias. I turned my drawings
into silkscreen designs, which
I then printed on to material and
made into clothing.” Thus, the
cycle is complete: “‘Ugly’ bacteria
swabbed from my own body can
be worn on my body in the form
of beautiful patterns.”
