Fernando Lobina’s degree
included an Erasmus year in
Berlin, working for the likes of
Vice, and Hubert & Fischer,
which he says helped him boost
both his technical skills and his
ability to fulfil a brief. His
project, Episode 18, Penelope,
pays homage to James Joyce’s
experimental use of the English
language. “It recreates Molly
Bloom’s 4,391 word, single
sentence monologue – found in
the final chapter of Ulysses –
using a modified dot matrix
printer,” Lobina explains. “This
allowed for Bloom’s stream of
consciousness to be printed over
several hours, resulting in a 17m
print. Natural distortion
occurred as a result of the
modified technology.”

Jessica Coleman tells us that her
course has “given me the
confidence to communicate and
collaborate effectively with other
people.” The design graduate
likes to modify existing content,
presenting a new take on it for
audiences. “The reason why I
love this avenue of creative work
stems from my interest in the
everyday delights and problems,
which is then illustrated through
print-based design, brand
identities and visuals,” she says.
