One of the great things about working on Computer
Arts is that it cuts through the cynicism that, for me, can
seep into a working day – this is the age of Brexit, after
all! The team becomes genuinely inspired by the creative
minds we connect with each month. The mag’s aim is
to explore what’s possible in creativity, noting but not
fixating on the limitations.
That’s why our annual New Talent issue is so special.
First of all, we get to champion a new creative up front on
the cover (skip back to page 3 for more on that). It’s also
the issue that we speak to and promote graduates from all
across the UK – the very definition of creative potential!
And no two grads are ever the same. Each educational
institution they represent is different for a start, with
varying approaches to teaching. For example, this year
Central Saint Martins’ grad show displayed the first fruits
of a brand new syllabus: an approach that swapped rigid
siloed subjects with ‘blurry edged platforms’. The idea was
to produce hybrid and broad-based practitioners ready for
real-life, multi-disciplinary work, while also giving the
option to specialise. The results were mightily impressive.
So too were the graduates who we saw from Scotland,
in particular Gray’s School and Glasgow. In truth, we could
fill the whole issue with grad highlights – the hardest part
is curating it all. I just hope whether you’re a graduate
yourself, a seasoned pro or an enthusiast, you get as much
from our New Talent special as I did working on it. As with
the rest of this issue, it’s time to leave the cynicism at the
door and dive into 100 pages of insight and inspiration!

On page 68 we discuss how collaborative
working can bring the best out of creative
partnerships. Case in point: Buzelli and
Ngai have long realised that what might
be good is often never good enough.
