eight markets. In addition, it offers eight main
types of foil. Furthermore, when we worked on
the Foilco’s brand values, we narrowed them
down to eight key areas: knowledge, discovery,
possibility, inspiration, innovation, conduct,
process and responsibility.
The number eight seemed important in
various ways, and that would feed into our
designs (see The Logo Process box, right).
Another element of our visual approach came
from looking at rolls of foil side-on, with their
circular forms and concentric lines reminiscent
of a tree stump. That idea tied in nicely with the
company’s long heritage in the industry, and also
fed into the look of the identity.
Although we decided on a mono colour
scheme for the logo, which would be stamped
in foil wherever possible, we needed imagery
that would demonstrate how fantastic foil
looks. To do this, we worked closely with London
photographer Andy Mackie. As well as imagery,
we thought that the project would benefit from
a bespoke typeface to help Foilco stand out

THE TYPE APPROACH
By Rick Banks
Dave Sedgwick and Foilco wanted me to capture
the flow of the foil as it’s worked and applied.
For inspiration, Dave showed me the new
photographic style, which showed rolls of foil
and paper creating these lovely organic shapes.
Following a tour of the factory and seeing the
humongous rolls of foil on bespoke machines, I
came up with three potential typographic routes.
We decided to proceed with the idea of
suggesting the movement of the foil on the
machinery through a typeface with a set of
quirky alternative characters. Developing the
alternative letters with the idea of foil passing
through a roller, a really nice serif started to
appear which itself had a sense of movement.
Suddenly, I was developing lots of alternatives,
and the font was starting to lose its DNA, so
