client, the branding developed along the bold
and graphic line, with a twist of vintage velvet
and Wes Anderson.

THE DESIGN PROCESS
Nanna Kopp Hansen
The look and feel had to be bold, surprising and
sophisticated, suggesting the high quality of
the syrup and its experimental flavour
possibilities. Some of our inspiration came
from the world of the bartender, in terms of
its materials and structures, the atmosphere
of classy bars in the real world as well as
fictional ones in Wes Anderson movie scenes.
The personalities of the founders were also an
influence: they’re smart, down-to-earth guys
with lots of energy who can talk for hours about
perfect flavour combinations.
The brand name, The Syrup Company, clearly
describes what the product is about, so we
decided not to go with a logo and let the typeface
communicate the character in a clear way. We
used Quiche Sans, which is bold, simple and
sophisticated, and very much on-brand.
Colour and colour coding were key aspects
for the packaging and the overall branding. As
well as the main brand colours for the logotype,
stationery and other collateral, with vintage
bar highlights, we created individual colour
schemes for each bottle label to express the mix
of flavours inside. These colours had to work with
the natural tone of the syrup, communicate the
taste experience and be clearly distinguishable
from the other flavours in the range. Several
of the syrups are a shade of red, so different
label colours were needed and selecting them

PROCESS
For the photo shoot we wanted to
show the syrups in real, yet artistically
curated settings that let the products
shine. The style of the pictures is very
much inspired by vintage bar set-ups
with materials, props and lighting to
match. We also wanted to convey the
handcrafted aspect of how the syrups
are made, which is straight from
fresh, real ingredients. Consequently,

we have the physical presence of fruit
that has been peeled and/or broken
into pieces – just like in a real bar or
kitchen setting.
For the pictures, the guys mixed
different fruit-based drinks in a
way that recommends how the
syrups should be served. We worked
with Copenhagen-based lifestyle
photographer Morten Benzton.

it was also
important that
some of the

stood out against
the syrup in
the bottles.
