NEW WORKSHOP SERIES OFF TO CREATIVE START
A new educational initiative for
2019 from the Photographic Society
of New Zealand (PSNZ) is seeing
enthusiastic attendance from members
as professional photographers guide
them through hands-on examination of
specific styles — and there’s still plenty
to come.
The PSNZ Workshop Series 2019
comprises six events throughout the year;
three have already taken place, to much
acclaim, with the others scheduled to run
between August and November.
On 10 August, veteran pro photographer
Scott Fowler will take a limited number of
attendees on an exploration of the world
of portrait lighting. This will be followed by
a workshop on fine-art printing hosted by
Shona Jaray in Auckland on 14 September
and a two-day bird-photography
workshop in Oka ̄rito with Craig McKenzie,
beginning 23 November.
Attendees at the first three workshops
in the programme — Creative
Photography with Bruce Girdwood,
Advanced Creative Photoshop with
Helen McLeod, and Astrophotography
with Leith Robertson — have come away
with both increased technical skills and
creative confidence in their practice.
Shedding light on what participants
can expect from an event in the PSNZ
Workshop Series 2019, Moira Blincoe,
the organization’s president, recounts
the success of Bruce Girdwood’s first
workshop on creativity.“Prior to the workshop, Bruce asked
attendees to think about creativity
and what it means to them,” she says.
“He asked everyone to send him one
photograph that is ‘important to you
because it reflects your idea of creativity’;
and to come with an open mind and a
willingness to ‘let go of the shackles’.”
Following a group sharing of images and
ideas, Bruce walked attendees through
his personal life journey and its influence
on his own creative practice. Sparing
neither high nor low, the workshop
leader bared his soul to his fellow PSNZ
members before challenging them all
to a comfort zone–expanding creative
challenge for the day.
