(Antfer) #1
One of Aotearoa’s foremost
documentary photographers presents
a new show spanning his three-decade
career, capturing the way working life
has changed for Kiwis throughout the
country.

Peter James Quinn has been shooting
our country for more than 30 years,
with assignments taking him into every
corner of daily life imaginable. He has
created images of East Cape
farm-hands, K Road prostitutes,
politicians in parliament, West Coast
coal miners, and scores of professions
in between.

This new show not only celebrates
Peter’s storied career but also examines

the ways in which the nature of work
has changed. From ‘pioneering spirit’ to
cold automation, entrepreneurialism,
and exploitation, the exhibition looks at
how both the good and the bad sides of
labour have evolved over the decades.

The series finds a comfortable home
in the New Zealand Portrait Gallery,
a Wellington waterfront exhibition
space dedicated to presenting portraits
of New Zealand’s diverse peoples,
illuminating the changing ways we view
ourselves and how we have developed
as a nation.

Admission to the Working Life
exhibition is free; see
nzportraitgallery.org.nz for more details.
