images of the same scene using varying
exposures, blending them later in
Adobe Photoshop. He also stitches
images together. However, he limits
post-production strictly to the various
rules of competitions, in which he
has been gaining increasing success.
Among other accomplishments,
last year he was a landscape
finalist in New Zealand Geographic
Photographer of the Year Awards and
shortlisted as Australian Geographic
Nature Photographer of the year.
But what really drives Yan to the heights
and lengths he takes? He says, while
there’s a great deal of satisfaction in
taking images and showing people
places that they wouldn’t otherwise
see, ultimately, he wants to use the
images positively to engage awareness of
environmental preservation.
Yan’s photography is going from strength
to strength, and now he is adding another
skill to the mix: he has started taking his
own small-group photography workshops
in both New Zealand and Patagonia. He
hopes to teach others his way of capturing
the world’s most precipitous landscapes
as they are bathed in the exquisite glow of
the heavens.
