15 YEARS | RETROSPECTIVE

Reaching the venerable age of 15 is no small feat
for a magazine, especially in today’s publishing
climate. To celebrate the anniversary, we look back
at past issues of D-Photo and the industry that they
reported on for the past decade and a half

15 YEARS OF D-PHOTO

August–September 2004
— D-Photo Issue No. 1
The early 2000s was a time
when compact cameras
were king, camcorders were
something that people were
still interested in, and the
most advanced camera
phone on the market was
one from Casio Computer
with 3.2MP.

February–March 2009 —
D-Photo Issue No. 28
Witness the birth of the mirrorless craze, with
the release of the Panasonic Lumix G1. The
introduction of the Micro Four Thirds format is a
true break from the SLR standard, bringing the
first fully digital interchangeable-lens camera.

“Given the quality of its pilot camera,
I expect the Micro Four Thirds standard
will easily make headway into the
market,” our reviewer Harley Ogier notes.
We reckon that he might have been onto
something.

April–May 2009 —
D-Photo Issue No. 29
Canon’s update to the 5D debuts
in this issue, and it shifts from
significant to stone-cold classic.
The 5D Mark II is the first DSLR for
the advanced-amateur user to pack a
35mm full-frame sensor, as well as offering truly
cinematic video shooting — features that will
come to be mandatory in any DSLR worth its
salt.
“I can’t really think of anything seriously
wrong with this camera ... It exceeded my
expectations,” says reviewer Phil Hanson. What
more is there to say?

April–May 2010 — D-Photo Issue No. 35
After serving the photographic community
for five years, we decide that it is time to really
celebrate New Zealand’s enthusiast talent, so the
Amateur Photographer Awards is born. This first
year is sponsored by Canon, and includes four
categories: People, Monochrome, Landscape, and
Emotion.
This issue also sees the launch of the first full-frame
mirrorless camera, the sleek
Leica M9 (only $10K)
and we get the sad
news that Kodak is
officially discontinuing
the production of film.
