physical nature is occurring. To the east, a mental aspect
of the spellwork is happening. To the south, much
physical energy is around the event. In the west, there
are heavy emotions involved.


Some candles will also sputter and crackle, another
traditional form of communication. Softly chattering
candles indicate things of a personal nature are being
affected. Frequent sputters mean a person of authority is
influencing what happens. A candle that has strong
crackles means arguments and quarrels are likely.


The strength of a candle flame also has meaning. A
candle that puts out a strong, steady flame is a good
sign. It indicates that a lot of power and energy are
being projected into your spell. When you use figure
candles, it symbolizes that one person strongly
influences and possibly controls the other. A jumping
flame represents raw emotions and perhaps heated
arguments. A weak flame is an indication that you are
facing resistance and opposition against gaining your
desire. In this case, you must repeat the spell several
times in order to overcome this opposition.


If a spell calls for you to burn candles for a specified
length of time, then put them out and reburn them later.
Do not blow out the candles. Snuffing the flame with a
candle snuffer or your fingers seals the energy into the
spell instead of blowing it away.


Tradition also says you should not strike a sulfur
match to light ritual candles. A lighter can be used to
initially light the altar candles. Then, light a simple
white candle from the altar candle and ignite the other
candles with this.
