them.


When anointing candles, always use only a small
amount of oil. Then, wipe your hands carefully before
proceeding with the ritual. To use oil in a seven-day,
glass-enclosed candle, simply put a few drops on the top
of the candle and carefully spread it around.


Herbs can be used with candle burning in three simple
ways. After oiling a candle, you can roll it lightly in
crushed herbs (see this page), or you may sprinkle the
herbs in a circle around the lit candles. If you use
incense to be burned on charcoal, you may sprinkle the
herbs on the coals. Only a small amount of herbs is
required for any of these procedures. If you do not care
for the incense, herbs, and oils listed, you can always
substitute other appropriate ones from this page.
Frankincense, combined frankincense and myrrh, and
lotus are good all-purpose incenses.


Many of the herbs can be found right in your kitchen.
Herbs such as basil, allspice, nutmeg, ginger, cloves,
cinnamon, and sage are commonly used in cooking.
Finding lemon verbena need not be a problem if you
have a small area for growing this herb. The dried leaves
can also be used in a delicious tea without harmful
effects. However, although it is easily cultivated by even
the blackest of gardening thumbs, lemon verbena tends
to spread and will take over existing flowerbeds unless
you vigorously keep it within bounds.


Check for the correct phase of the moon and the
proper day for candle magick. If the phase of the moon
is not a good one for the type of ritual you will be doing,
reschedule the spellwork for a more appropriate time. If
