remain consistent with previous versions so
switching to iOS 13 will not feel alien in any
way. The key parts, such as searching (2),
are exactly as they were and you can use
them in the same way no matter what app
you are in. Searching for a contact or web
content is done the same way as searching
for a location in Maps. You can still tap an
icon for a favourite destination (3) to be
routed in seconds and you can then enjoy the
superior map display that will accompany you
on your journey. The fact that the visuals for
locations have been improved (4) means that
everything feels a little more ‘real world’ than
before which is an added bonus. Navigation
just became a whole lot easier.

Messages has received only minor visual changes, but
there are new game-changing features inside the app

A more personal Messages

T

here is one feature built into iOS
13 that could be considered a
game-changer for anyone who
regularly contacts new people. If you go
to Settings>Messages you can tap ‘Share
Name and Photo’ and then select a photo
for your profile. Crop it as you need to and
then input the name you want to display. At
the bottom of the screen you get to choose
Contacts Only, Always Ask or Anyone and
this last part is crucial. It means that when
you send a new message the recipient will
see who you are straightaway.

An end to randoms
No more random numbers which often
result in a rejected call and instead
many more conversations and work
communications could result because
of this one simple change. The fact that
you have full control over how it is used
is the icing on the cake of a feature that

will change your way of working and
communicating every single day. Apple
has also introduced a new way to use the
iOS keyboard and it is one that you may
be familiar with if you use other
platforms or some third-party
keyboards – swiping!

Swipe to type
It is called QuickPath and it
will make your text entry much
simpler once you get used to
the way it works. Indeed, it can
be used with one thumb if you
have some dexterity and of
course the feature is available in
all apps that require text entry,
not just Messages. For many
people, Messages is their most
used app and it is great to see
some serious improvements
coming to it in iOS 13.
