iOS 13 hands-on

The best features work as one...

Computer-like iPad features

T

he newest iPads easily rival
some laptops and desktops in
terms of raw power, but for many
they have been held back by the general
lack of flexibility for specialist tasks
within iOS. With the hardware power in
place it was time for iOS to reflect this and
in iPadOS we are seeing the first move
towards this.
There is a selection of features onboard
that will give users many more options to
work as they would on a laptop, but with
the same grace and portability the iPad
hardware has always offered. The improved
Split View and Slide Over options let you
work with multiple files and using multiple
apps at the same time and much effort
has been put into making your general
navigation of the environment much more
efficient than previously.

The Files app has been enhanced with
full iCloud Drive support which will allow
quick file sharing, and the ability to connect
to external devices opens up the iPad to
a wealth of file types and collaborative
working instantly. The new high-resolution
previews of images etc within Files makes it
much easier to quickly view the content you
need and you can also mark up files and
rotate them as needed.

Mac-like Safari
The desktop version of websites is now
automatically presented in Safari, once
again adding to the real computer feel, and
popular web apps like WordPress are now
much easier to use through any bespoke
touch interface. Text editing is improved so
that you can select text and cut and paste
using new gestures which make a lot more

sense now. Custom fonts can be installed
to use system wide and the new floating
keyboard will make one-handed typing
a perfectly reasonable option in iOS 13.
The list goes on, and with all of the other
benefits of iOS 13 working exactly as they
should on any supported iPad, iPadOS is a
huge and significant update.

Text editing has been improved thanks to new
cut and paste gestures in iPadOS...
