Get more from Live Photos

A

still photo is a moment frozen in time – evoking memories
of a person, pet or place. A Live Photo from your iPhone
captures a three-second video snapshot of your subject,
creating a more accurate memory. As Live Photos are a series
of still frames you can do more with them using the Photos app.
For example, if your subject has their eyes closed you can scrub
to a frame where they have their eyes open. You can also create
animated clips to share with family and friends. These looping
or bouncing clips work well with repetitive sequences such as
a child playing on a swing. You can even use Live Photos to
simulate long exposures, a technique DSLR photographers use
to turn seas into ephemeral washes of paint-like foam.

Knowledge base

Key Photo
A Live Photo is a collection of
consecutive frames. A key frame is
automatically chosen to represent the
contents of a Live Photo. Choose a
better Key Photo in the Edit panel.

Export options
Here we’ve exported a Live Photo’s
manually selected Key Photo as a still .jpg
photo to send to friends. We’ve also used
Photo’s Share menu to create a looping
animated .gif file to share via social media.

Animation and effects
Using this dropdown you can
make the three-second Live Photo
loop continuously or bounce back
and forth forever. Long Exposure
combines multiple frames to
create a soft motion blur from
moving objects such as waves.

Change the
colours and tones
Although a Live Photo is
a mini movie you can edit
every frame’s colour and
tones. Adjust the colours
and tones when working
with one frame and it will
be applied to them all.
