the timeline and then press Alt+Shift+R.

Step-by-step Shoot slo-mo and retime footage

1

Set up your iPhone
In Settings>Camera click ‘Record Video’.
Go to Settings>Camera>Record Slo-mo. 720p
HD at 240 fps will capture a very smooth and
super slow version of a fast-moving subject.

2

Shoot and sync
In Camera choose the Slo-Mo setting
and tap to record your subject in action. Once
connected to Wi-Fi you can sync your slo-mo
footage via iCloud to your desktop Photos app.

3

Import from Photos
To work with your own slo-mo clips, go
to the LIBRARIES panel in iMovie and click on
‘Photos’. Choose ‘Albums’ from the dropdown
and drag your Slo-Mo clip into the timeline.

4

Play the clip
Tap the spacebar to play your clip. As it’s
been recorded in slow motion the main body of
the clip will have a tortoise icon on it. The start
and end of the clip play in real-time.

7

Slow down time
Click on the first split section. Click on the
Speed icon above the Viewer. Set the Speed
dropdown to Slow. Choose 25%. This causes
the camera to linger on the flower for longer.

5

Retime the clip
In the timeline drag the little filmstrip icon
right to slow down the action even more.
Drag it to the left to speed up the subject’s
movement if required.

8

Create speed ramp
Click on the middle clip. Set the Speed
dropdown to Fast. Click on the 8x button so
make the camera whizz from the flower to the
jeep. The third clip plays in real-time.

6

Split the clip
Add Retime.mov to the timeline. Scrub the
playhead to just before the camera moves from
the flower. Right-click and choose ‘Split Clip’.
Split the clip again after the pan to the jeep.

9

Freeze a moment
Scrub to the last frame. Click on the
Speed icon then set the Speed dropdown to
Freeze. This enables you to extend and hold
the last frame for a few seconds.
