Final Cut Pro X

Produce filmic effects

V

ideo recording gadgets such as iPhones and GoPros
do a great job of capturing footage that looks the same
onscreen as it does to the naked eye. Thanks to faithful
tones and colours and a smooth frame rate, our digital clips
have a realistic look. In contrast, older analogue film cameras
produced a more stylised look. Film stock and chemical
processing could cause colours to shift in hue, making blue sky
look cyan for example. Primitive lenses let in less light at the
edges, resulting in darkened vignettes around the film’s frame.
The act of projecting film could add dust and scratches to the
footage. We’ll demonstratehowtogivevideoclipsa vintagefilm

How to convert pristine digital footage into retro film by adding analogue artefacts

Add analogue artefacts

Add a vintage film vibe

Physical damage
Due to its physical nature, film
can get scratched or contaminated by
hair particles and dust. Torn sprocket
holes will cause the film to judder.
These analogue artefacts can be
added to digital video using the
Aged Film Effect.

Hue/Saturation Curves
Curves enable you to change the hue
of blue skies to a cross-processed and
more filmic cyan green. We’ve also
used curves to selectively darken the
blues of the sky to make the clouds
stand out more in contrast.

Sound effects
In addition to the usual iLife sound
effects used by iMovie, Final Cut Pro
has access to its own collection of
sound effects. The Movie Projector
sound complements the visual filmic
artefacts from the Effects browser.

Modify properties
Most effects that you add to a
clip can be modified using the
sliders in the Inspector. Some
effects only have an Amount
slider while others – such as
Aged Film Effect – have multiple
editable properties.

You can use a range of tricks and techniques in Final Cut to
give your footage a more filmic, vintage look...

Less is more
When you add multiple video effects
to a clip it can look over-processed,
especially when you’re working with
complex effects such as Aged Film.
Once you think you’ve got the filmic
look that you desire go to Aged Film’s
Amount slider and drag it down from
100 to 70. This dials down the results
produced by the effect’s other sliders.
