When using curves to adjust the hue or luminance of the sky be careful not to
push the adjustments too far as this can emphasise compression artefacts.

Step-by-step Turn video into film

1

Import footage
Choose File>New Event. Label it ‘Film
Effects’. Click ‘OK’. Choose File>Import Media.
Browse to our D-Day themed ‘Film_start’ clip.
Click ‘Import Selected’. Drag it to the timeline.

2

Boost colour/contrast
Our GoPro clip has dull colours and a flat
contrast. Click on the clip. Choose Window>Go
To>Color Inspector. In Exposure set Shadows
to -21. In Saturation set Master to 80.

3

Selective adjustment
In the Effects browser click on ‘Color’.
Drag Hue/Saturation Curves onto the clip. Use
the Hue vs Luma eyedropper to sample the sky.
Drag the curve control point down to darken it.

4

Colour shift
Click on the Hue vs Hue eyedropper.
Click the eyedropper on the darkened sky to
sample it. Drag the resulting curve control point
upwards to change the blue hue to cyan.

7

Add jitter
Film is fed through a projector’s cogs via
sprocket holes. When the holes tear, the flow of
the film becomes erratic. Set Jitter Amount to
0.1 and Jitter Variance to 0.2 to mimic this.

5

Add aged film
Go to Stylize in the Effects browser and
drag Aged Film onto the clip. Choose Window>
Go To>Inspector. Go to the Aged Film section
and click ‘Show’ to see its properties.

8

Darken the edges
Drag Vignette from Stylize onto the clip. In
the Inspector’s Vignette section set Darken to a
more subtle 0.8. Push Size to 0.5 to restrict the
vignette to the edges of the frame.

6

Increase wear and tear
By default the Aged Film effect adds
clumps of film grain and scratches. Pop
Scratches up to 11. To add more wear and tear
push the Dust and Hairs sliders to the right.

9

Sound effects
Click the Show Audio Sidebar icon. Go to
Final Cut Pro Sound Effects. In the Mech:Tech
folder drag the Movie Projector sound effect
onto the timeline to complement the effects.
