abuse 375

the best available estimates from the National Center on Elder Abuse (2005
report) indicate that:

• Between 1 and 2 million Americans age sixty-five and older have
been injured, exploited, or otherwise mistreated by someone upon
whom they depended for care.
• The frequency of elder abuse ranges from 2 to 10% based on vari-
ous surveys.
• Approximately one in fourteen incidents (excluding incidents of self-
neglect) of abuse or neglect come to the attention of authorities.
• For every case of elder abuse, neglect, exploitation, or self-neglect
reported to authorities, about five go unreported.
