degree requirements for
m.s.l.i.s. with library media
specialist (lms) program
leading to new york state
teacher certification
LMS is one of Pratt’s two education
programs, the other being Art and
Design Education. To give students a
richer experience through collaboration
and interdisciplinary approaches, these
programs work together to meet program
and certification requirements in the
field of education so that students in
both programs can complete all of their
education coursework at Pratt. Students
in the Library Media Specialist program
track work with children and young
adults in school libraries. Completion
of this program leads to New York State
teacher certification in the area of LMS.
Students wishing to enter the LMS
program must apply and be formally
accepted as an LMS student. The New
York State requisite—a background
in liberal arts and sciences—will be
evaluated prior to admission. Admission
to the program is based on the evaluation
of the student’s admissions folder
and may include an interview and a
review of GRE or other test scores. To
comply with New York State Education
Department (NYSED) requirements for
certification, students must complete the
following coursework:
▶ (^) Pedagogical core in education
(six credits of coursework,
ED-608 Roots of Urban Education
and ED-610 Child and Adolescent
Development, in the Department
of Art and Design)
▶ (^) Two noncredit seminars: child abuse
recognition, and school violence
prevention and intervention
▶ (^) The four core, required
courses for the M.S. in Library
and Information Science
▶ (^) Two electives
Recommended courses:
LIS-648 School Media Centers
LIS-676 Literature and Literacy for
Children
LIS-677 Literature and Literacy for
Young Adults
LIS-680 Instructional Technologies
LIS-690 Student Teaching: 1–6
LIS-692 Student Teaching: 7–12
Core LIS and LMS track courses require
a total of 100 clock hours of field
observation. LIS-690 and LIS-692 each
require 20 full days (for a total of 40 days)
of student teaching in three NYSED
administered tests. Elective courses

Librarianship: Tween Media and Literacy,
Genre Drama, Graphic Novel, Storytelling,
and Instructional Technology. See http://www.
pratt.edu/apply for more information on

program focus areas
In consultation with faculty advisers,
students generally focus their elective
coursework to meet individual
career goals in the field of library
and information science. Within this
framework, we have developed areas
of emphasis based on the strengths of
our curriculum and faculty as well as
disciplinary and collaborative connections
with the Institute. These areas are
described below.
Knowledge Organization
and Cultural Heritage
Growing out of traditional studies of
cataloging and classification, database
design, storage, and retrieval, this area
has emerged as one central to the latest
developments in Internet and Web-based
information studies.
It prepares students for careers in
online services, digital collections and
libraries, Web libraries, and information
systems and networks.
