Master of Science in Art and
Design Education must have
completed a four-year undergraduate
degree program with a minimum of
24 credit hours in art and art history at
an institution of higher education that
is regionally accredited or approved
by the New York State Department
of Education. A course in child and
adolescent psychology and six credits in
a foreign language are also required as
pre- or co-requisites. The applicant must
submit a portfolio of 15 images including
observational drawings along with other
media (a few teaching projects may also
be included). The portfolio should be
submitted as color copies or in digital
format. A telephone or personal interview
will follow. A TOEFL score of 600 (250
computer or 100 Internet) is required.
This 24-credit-hour program is
open to individuals with an M.F.A.
degree or those currently enrolled in the
M.F.A. program at Pratt. The portfolio
requirements are the same as those listed
for the M.S. in Art and Design Education.
The program may be completed in two
semesters by those already holding the
M.F.A. degree.
School of Information
and Library Science
Applicants for admission to the Master
of Science in Library and
Information Science (fall, spring,
and summer entrance) must hold a
bachelor’s degree from an accredited
college or university. The applicant
must have a superior scholastic record
or otherwise give evidence of ability
to perform work on the graduate level.
Applicants are expected to offer evidence
of maturity and leadership potential
for the profession. An in-person or
telephone interview may be required;
applicants will be contacted by the
School of Information and Library
Science if an interview is deemed
necessary. The school may request that
applicants take the Graduate Record
Exam (GRE). Applicants may apply
for non-matriculated status and take
up to 6 credits. International students
whose first language is not English must
submit a TOEFL score of at least 600
(250 computer or 100 Internet). Students
who are not international but whose first
language is not English must submit the
TOEFL or GRE. Students may continue
to apply after the January 5th deadline
until the department is full. SILS accepts
applications on a rolling basis. If courses
are full, applicants will be moved to the
following semester.
Applicants for admission to the
Master of Science Advanced
Certificates in Library and
Information Science (fall, summer,
and spring entrance) must hold a master’s
degree in library and information science.
A TOEFL score of 600 (250 computer, 100
Internet) is required.
Applicants for admission to the
Master of Arts in Media Studies
should have a B.A., B.S., or B.F.A. from
an accredited institution. Candidates
must submit (1) a statement of purpose
in which they describe their interest in
the program; (2) 10–20 pages of relevant
writing sample(s), with emphasis on
analytical writing about media.
General Requirements
Deficiencies in
Undergraduate Preparation
Domestic applicants with deficiencies in
their undergraduate preparation of not
more than six credits may be admitted,
at the discretion of the department, on a
nonmatriculating basis for not more than
18 graduate credits. These students may
become matriculated upon completion
of at least eight graduate credits with
a grade of B or better. Applicants with
deficiencies of more than six credits
should apply as special students on the
undergraduate level and may apply on the
graduate level once these deficiencies are
satisfactorily removed.
Graduate Record Examination
Although Pratt Institute does not require
the Graduate Record Examination
for most programs, students who
already have taken this examination
should have the results forwarded to
the Office of Graduate Admissions.
The GRE is required for Architecture
(first professional), Art History, and the
combined Art History/Library Science
and combined Art History/Fine Art
