10.4.5 Thermal diffusion
Let us consider a mixture of gases in a system with a temperature gradient. The lighter
gas diffuses in the direction of increasing temperature and the heavier gas in the direction of
decreasing temperature. This phenomenon is called thermal diffusion. It may be used for the
separation of gases.
