26 DERMATOLOGY

Kenneth B Batts, DO

INTRODUCTION

  • Skin serves as a protective barrier against mechanical,
    environmental, and infective forces.

  • Sport-specific dermatoses may incapacitate an athlete
or expose a teammate to a potential infection placing
him or her at risk for disqualification or impede his or
    her performance.

MECHANICAL INJURY

ABRASIONS

•Commonly known as rug burn, strawberries,or road
rash, occur on artificial turf, floor mats, synthetic
courts, and asphalt roads.
