69 CORE STRENGTHENING
Joel Press, MD
OVERVIEW
- Core rehabilitation allows the multisegmented spinal
column to maintain its center of gravity through mul-
tiple ranges of motion, counteracting gravity, and
applied forces to decrease torsion and shear on the
spinal structures (ligaments, disk, nerve). - Definition of core
- The core is the lumbopelvic hip complex.
- The core is where the center of gravity is located
and where all movement begins (Clark, Fater, and
Reuteman, 2000).
