69 CORE STRENGTHENING

Joel Press, MD

OVERVIEW

  • Core rehabilitation allows the multisegmented spinal
column to maintain its center of gravity through mul-
tiple ranges of motion, counteracting gravity, and
applied forces to decrease torsion and shear on the
    spinal structures (ligaments, disk, nerve).

  • Definition of core

    1. The core is the lumbopelvic hip complex.

    2. The core is where the center of gravity is located
and where all movement begins (Clark, Fater, and
      Reuteman, 2000).
