My girlfriend told people we

broke up

but we didn’t!

Hey Terra,
I love my girlfriend very much, and I thought she felt the same way about me, but I just heard
that she told some people that we broke up. It’s not true! I asked her if she said that we broke
up, and she told me she was just kidding when she said it. She’s really beautiful and very pop-
ular, and I wonder why she’s with me, but she says that she loves me and I want to believe
her. I don’t know what’s going on here, and I’m having trouble trusting her. So could you help
me, please?

Dear Needing Help,

I don’t blame you for wondering what’s going on here. Your girlfriend spreads the word that
you two are “history,” and then she says she was only kidding. (The people she talked to
obviously didn’t think she was kidding!) Telling others about your supposed breakup may have
been her way of sending a message to you.
If she isn’t interested in being your girlfriend anymore, encourage her to be honest about
it. You deserve the truth. You sound like a very loving person, but you can’t hold a relation-
ship together by yourself. Healthy relationships are a two-way street. Both people have to
work together to make their relationship healthy and balanced. I hope this helps!

In friendship,
Terra
