Everything You Need to Know About Racism by Nasoan Sheftel-Gomes (New York:
Rosen Publishing Group, 2000). This helpful resource asks: How did racism
begin in America? How does it affect you? How can you make a difference? In
addition to the answers to these questions, and many more, this book includes
a “Where to Go for Help” section, plus practical ways to detect, cope with, and
eliminate racism.

I can’t get along with my stepdad

Hey Terra,

My dad left when I was little, and I never knew him. My mom remarried about a year ago. My
problem is my stepfather—he and I just don’t get along. He has opinions about everything, and
he acts like he’s this really tough dude. And just because he’s married to my mom, I’ve got to
listen to him. No way! I never listen to anything he says even though my mom says I should.
I feel like “Who does this guy think he is?” He’s not my dad so why should he think I’m going
to put up with this? I’m not! We fight a lot. He calls me a punk, and that really makes me mad.
As soon as I graduate next year (even before I start college), I’m getting so far away from here.
Do you have any suggestions about how I can get him off of my back until then?
