FOLLOW THE LEADER

experienced...more capable...more talented than they are! They do
not surround themselves with “yes men” or “compliant women” who
will never challenge their thinking. They understand that they become
strong by surrounding themselves with strong people. Conversely, they
weaken their leadership potential by surrounding themselves with weak
people! A good athlete knows that he only improves his game by playing
with others who are better than he is. You only take your game up to a
new level by competing with someone who is a better player. As a leader
becomes better at the “game of leadership”, he wants to make others
better also. A good leader is always growing – and is helping grow others
in the process.

“Identify good talented people and put
them in positions they enjoy doing.”^17
(Herman Cain)

We see this principle of the “inner circle” in Christ’s ministry through
His relationship with “Peter, James and John.”

Principle:
“Th e people closest to you largely determine
the level of your success.”

At this point, leadership is like mountain climbing: The higher the ascent,
the fewer the climbers. The higher the mountain, the greater the dedication
and skill required. Mt. Everest is not for novice climbers! The more
dangerous and daring the climb, the higher the trust level must be between
the climbers! Often each one’s survival is dependent upon the other. A
mistake by one can become fatal to the others. Whether in marriage or in
ministry – TRUST is the foundation of a lasting relationship and partnership!
Trust is based upon trustworthiness. When the trust is destroyed, the basis for
the partnership is destroyed. When there is a major violation of trust, it can
seldom – if ever – be fully restored. It can be forgiven – but not forgotten!
Leadership may be retained – but trust and respect will probably never
be fully regained. No person ever lives long enough to fully redeem and
restore his trust level once it has been significantly broken. They will go
to their grave with a dark cloud of distrust lingering over them!
