only say it was a lesson in dealing with individuals who have no principles or ethics. I
discovered much to my dismay there was very little we could do, but I’m one of those
people who believe in karma, what comes around goes around. We did find out that
the car dealer who ripped Dana off was arrested for selling cocaine a year later and
went to jail for a very long time.
I decided while Dana was still in high school that I would give him his own
American Express card for emergencies and with it teach him a little responsibility. I
made sure he knew it was only to be used for emergencies. The following month I
receive my bill from American Express with $1,800 in charges on it that were not
mine. I had problems with my American Express bill with charges in the past so I put a
call into American Express to explain there were charges on my bill that did not
belong to me. It never even occurred to me that it could have been Dana. I had just
given him the card. A ring and bracelet were charged that had been purchased at a
jewelry store, and there were a couple of restaurant charges. The person on the
phone asked me if I knew a Dana White. They then informed me all the receipts were
signed by Dana White. Dana hadn’t had the card but a couple of days when he went
out and bought jewelry for his girlfriend and was taking his friends out to lunch and
putting it all on his credit card. So much for emergencies and responsibility, I don’t
know what I was thinking. When Dana came home, I asked him how he planned to pay
for everything he had charged to the American Express card since he was not working
and had no job prospects. He stated he didn’t think about paying when he was using
the card. The card was taken away from him.
As noted previously, Dana and his sister were very close when they were young.
He always watched out for her. In high school, however, they did not get along very
well and were constantly fighting. Kelly entered Bishop Gorman High School in ninth
grade, and Dana was two years ahead of her. There was an incident soon after Kelly
arrived at Bishop Gorman. I received a phone call at work one day from Dana. He
informed me I would probably receive a phone call from the police letting me know
he had been arrested and was in jail. I asked him why he thought he was about to be
arrested. He explained he was on his way to the grocery store to beat the hell out of
