purpose of examining the nodes and removing tissue samples to exam-
ine under the microscope for evidence of cancer. However, certain vari-
ables that can be measured without surgery may be predictive of the
nodal involvement; one of which is level of serum acid phosphatase.
Suppose that an investigator considers conducting a case–control study
to evaluate this possible relationship between nodal involvement (cases)
and level of serum acid phosphatase. Suppose further that it is desirable
to detect an odds ratio ofy¼ 1 :5 for a person with a serum acid phos-
phatase level 1 standard deviation above the mean for his age group
using a two-sided test with a significance level of 5% and a power of
80%. Find the total sample size needed for using a two-sided test at the
0.05 level of significance.
