Danny Hakim and Jo Becker are investigative reporters at The New York Times and
Pulitzer Prize winners. In this issue, they write about Justice Clarence Thomas and his
wife, Ginni, a longtime political activist. ‘‘With the Supreme Court majority tilting his way
after Trump’s three appointments, there’s never been a more important time to write
about Clarence Thomas,’’ Hakim says. Becker delved into the Supreme Court in her book
‘‘Forcing the Spring,’’ about taking the issue of marriage equality to the court. ‘‘Thomas
is the third justice I’ve profiled and by far one of the most enigmatic,’’ Becker says. ‘‘It
was fascinating to see the world not only from his perspective but from that of his wife.’’

Behind the Scenes

Kathy Ryan, director of photography: ‘‘For
this issue, Reginald Dwayne Betts writes
about Tariq Trotter, who fronts the hip-hop
band the Roots. We commissioned the artists
Mickalene Th omas and Racquel Chevremont
to photograph Trotter onstage at the theater
of his new Off Broadway musical, ‘‘Black
No More.’’ Mickalene and Racquel, who work
together under the name Deux Femmes
Noires, photographed him using some stage
lighting, but as himself — not the character
he plays in the show. Th eaters make for an
excellent shooting location. You have texture
and dynamic lighting. Th ey’re not as sterile
as a studio.’’ Photograph by Nicholas Caiazza.
