Appendix B: Deciding for yourself about the research

➢ Culturally responsive classroom management has sometimes been criticized on the
grounds that it encourages teachers to “profile” or stereotype students according to their
ethnic, racial, or cultural backgrounds. Being culturally responsive, it is said, makes
teachers overlook the individual differences among students. Others argue that treating
students strictly as individuals makes teachers overlook students’ obvious cultural
heritages. How might you resolve this issue in your own mind? Again, go beyond the
obvious: imagine an actual conversation that you might have with your own students about
this issue.
