Classification notation


Each preferred or guide term in the TGDT is provided with an alphanumeric classifica-


tion code, which indicates its placement within the hierarchical structure of genus-species


relations. Classification codes are formed by appending to the facet’s letter a period and


decimal number for each branch taken in the hierarchy to arrive at the term itself. For ex-


ample, the term typesetting equipment has the classification O.3.5.44.78; its immedi-


ately broader term, equipment – its ‘parent’ – is classified as O.3.5.44.


These classification codes are intended primarily as a means to quickly move from a


term’s entry in the alphabetic listing to its corresponding position in the systematic list-


ing, but may also be used as a notational shorthand in indexing or retrieval applications.


Use


Depending on the purpose to which it is put, either the alphabetic or systematic listing


may be the best place to start when looking for the best term to describe a particular con-
