TENNIS

ASSOCIATED PRESS

If the shot-for-shot battle down
the stretch between Providence
and host Villanova was a sneak
peek of what’s ahead in March,
Madison Square Garden may be in
for quite a show.
Caleb Daniels scored 20 points,
Eric Dixon added 15 and Collin
Gillespie had 14 as the No. 11 Vil-
lanova men beat No. 9 Providence,
76-74, in a fantastic Big East
matchup T uesday night.
The Big East regular season
champion Friars (24-4, 14-3) and
the Wildcats could not shake the
other over the final furious min-
utes.
The Wildcats (22-7, 15-4) sur-
vived Providence’s press and
sealed the win from the free throw
line.
l DUKE 86, PITTSBURGH
56: Mike Krzyzewski’s final true
road game with Duke ended like
so many that came before it: with
the fourth-ranked Blue Devils
quickly quieting the crowd on
their way to another blowout win.
Freshman guard Trevor Keels
scored a career-high 27 points and
Duke (26-4, 16-3) clinched at least
a share of its 13th ACC regular
season title under Krzyzewski
with a rout of the host Panthers
(11-19, 6-13).
l TCU 74, KANSAS 64: Mike
Miles Jr. had 19 points and six
assists as the Horned Frogs (19-9,
8-8 Big 12) solidified their once-
shaky NCAA tournament résumé
by beating the sixth-ranked Jay-
hawks (23-6, 12-4) in Fort Worth
for their second straight win over
a top-10 team.
Kansas went from owning a
half-game lead to sitting a half-
game behind No. 3 Baylor (25-5,
13-4) in the Big 12 standings.
l KENTUCKY 83, MISSIS-
SIPPI 72: Oscar Tshiebwe had 18
points and 15 rebounds, Sahvir
Wheeler added 16 points, and the
seventh-ranked Wildcats (24-6,
13-4 SEC) shot 60 percent from the
field to hold off the Rebels (13-17,
4-13) in their home finale in Lex-
ington, Ky.
l WISCONSIN 70, PURDUE
67: Chucky Hepburn banked in a
tiebreaking three-pointer with 1.5
seconds left to give the 10th-
ranked Badgers (24-5, 15-4 Big
Ten) a narrow victory over the
eighth-ranked Boilermakers
(24-6, 13-6) in Madison, Wis., to
clinch a share of the conference
regular season title.
l TENNESSEE 75, GEORGIA
68: Josiah-Jordan James scored a
career-high 23 points, including
back-to-back three-pointers that
gave the 13th-ranked Volunteers
(22-7, 13-4 SEC) the lead early in
the second half, and Tennessee
overcame a slow start to beat the
struggling Bulldogs (6-24, 1-16) in
Athens, Ga.
l NEBRASKA 78, OHIO
STATE 70: Bryce McGowens
scored 26 points as the Cornhusk-
ers (9-21, 3 -16 Big Ten) handled the
No. 23 Buckeyes (18-9, 11-7) in
Columbus, Ohio.

Virginia Tech ends drought

Justyn Mutts had 14 points and
10 rebounds as the Virginia Tech
men (19-11, 11-8 ACC) ended a 17-
game losing streak to Louisville
(12-17, 6-13) with a 75-43 rout in
Blacksburg, Va.
l AMERICAN 69, HOLY
CROSS 63: Stacy Beckton Jr. had
23 points to carry the Eagles (10-
21) past the Crusaders (9-22) in the
first round of the Patriot League
tournament in Worcester, Mass.
l DAYTON 55, RICHMOND
53: Toumani Camara had 11 points
and 12 rebounds and R.J. Blakney
made a go-ahead dunk with 1.2
seconds left to lift the Flyers (21-9,
13-4 Atlantic 10) past the Spiders
(19-11, 10-7) in Richmond.

Hokies’ Kitley is ACC’s POY

Virginia Tech center Elizabeth
Kitley was named the ACC wom-
en’s basketball player of the year,
while North Carolina State’s Wes
Moore was chosen as coach of the
year.
Kitley, a 6-foot-6 junior, fin-
ished second in the league in both
scoring (17.7 points per game) and
rebounding (10.2) for the 21st-
ranked Hokies. This is t he first
time a Virginia Tech player has
earned the honor.
l BIG TEN: National scoring
leader Caitlin Clark of Iowa is the
Big Ten player of the year, and Kim
Barnes Arico of Michigan is coach
of the year.
Maryland’s Shyanne Sellers
was named the conference’s sixth
player of the year.
