Whistler in Watercolor
Freer Sackler Gallery, Washington, D.C.
Through October 6

Aftera researchteamconductedyearsofresearch on the
Freer Sackler’s 52 watercolors by James Abbott McNeill
Whistler—the largest collection of his watercolors in the
world—the paintings are being shown in an exhibition
this summer.
Th e collaboration included Emily Jacobson, a paper con-
servator; Blythe McCarthy, a scientist; and Lee Glazer, an
art historian. Th ey peeled back layers of history to deter-
mine how, exactly, Whistler made his watercolors and with
what materials. Th e research included X-ray technology,
infrared photography and UV-induced visible fl uorescent
photography to reveal covered elements in Whistler’s work.
One fi nding showed a watermark on one of the artist’s
mounted watercolors. Th e watermark reads “J. Whatman/
Turkey Mill/189?,” which means that the paper was made
by well-known and respected 18th-century British paper-
maker James Whatman. WA
