Meet the Artist

David Taylor (davidtaylorartist.com.au), of
Melbourne, Australia, is an internationally
known painter and instructor who has
been working in the watercolor medium
for many years. The award-winning artist
exhibits regularly in Australia, and has
also shown his work in the U.S., England,
the Channel Islands and Sweden. He’s the
co-author, with artist Ron Ranson, of the
book, Solving the Mystery of Watercolor (International Artist
Publishing, 2002).

Fast-moving weather forced Taylor to move
quickly to paint a smaller initial version of
Weathering the Storm, Strahan, Tasmania
(watercolor on paper, 26x39). “I can still feel the
wind and lashing rain against my face,” he says.
For this larger studio work, he used the same
approach, laying down lots of spontaneous,
fresh brushstrokes. Washes of stormy sky were
added early on in the painting, and dark values
were built up at the fi nish.

“The old tug boat resting a moment allowed me
to explore this spectacular vision,” says Taylor of
Time Out, Kettering, Tasmania (watercolor on
paper, 32x43). The light and depth of this
subject, with its gentle refl ections, misty edges
and strong shapes, lured Taylor to paint it. “My
plan was to say more with less by using fl uid,
unlabored brushwork to keep the freedom and
energy of nature and its cargo.”
