Meet the Artist

Since 1992, James Bartholomew (jamesbartholomew.
co.uk) has worked as a contemporary landscape and
seascape painter. He has a strong reputation within the
British contemporary art market, and his recognizable
loose, energetic style has gained widespread acclaim.
He’s a member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists,
and his work can be found in both private and
corporate collections around the world.

A Visual World

Bartholomew has been painting since he was 17 years old,
at which point he realized he could channel his love for
nature and the outdoors into a profession. He studied
illustration in school and then earned his degree in graphic
design at Leicester Polytechnic (now Montfort University).
Early on in his career, he came across a “to let” sign for a
studio space in an old mill near his home when he was walk-
ing his dog. Over the years, he has turned the space into his
own studio and gallery called Th e Millhouse Gallery.
It’s clear that Bartholomew paints the things he loves,
“from breaking waves on the Cornish coast at fi rst light,
to vibrant, crumbling Venetian facades ... from a storm
arriving into a sharply lit lakeland valley, to a drooling
1000-kg Hereford bull,” he says.
“For me,” he continues, “the best by-product of being
an artist is that I notice the visual world much more.
Sometimes, subjects in everyday situations look interest-
ing just because of an amazing combination of colors or
the light that falls on them.” WA
