- I brought with me
loose sheets of paper; an
8x12-inch, 100 percent
cotton watercolor sketch-
book I bound myself; and
a huge, new squirrel brush
(twice as large as what I’d
normally use). On the fi rst
day, Alvaro said to practice
with “a big brush and small
paper”—for the purposes of
learning. So, I used my new
brush in my sketchbook.
The spreads, as in the
example at right, were
12x16. (To see how I make a
hand-bound sketchbook,

4. I liked that Alvaro
isn’t precious about
anything. He’s bold and
real. He carries his
materials in an old army
bag. His palette is full,
his hands paint-stained.
It all corresponds with
the drips, spatters and
spontaneity of his wet-
into-wet techniques. - At some point,
I thought, “Why not
take a selfie with my
teacher?” Perhaps it
was no coincidence
that I chose to do it
on a day that Alvaro
was wearing a T-shirt
printed in French.
