I typically try not to “center” the visual elements in my paintings,

but this scene was fascinating because all the details lead the

viewer’s eye toward the center and the mysterious shadows at

the end of the alley. I emphasized the contrasting darks with the

brilliant sunlight, making the viewer feel present.
