A
s a lifetime Midwesterner, I can
measure out my encounters
with the seashore in weeks of
vacations taken over the years. Even
these limited experiences, however,
have been more than enough for me to
comprehend the signifi cant power of
the ocean—as a force of nature, a trigger of contemplation,
and a thing of beauty and awe. Th e need to interpret the
subject using the tools of the artist is a desire shared by
painters the world over.
“
Why do we
love the sea? It is
because it has
some potent
power to make
us think things we
like to think.
—ROBERT HENRI ”
(1865–1929)
In this issue, you’ll meet artists from Australia, England
and Serbia who turn to coastal landscapes for inspiration.
For David Taylor (on page 16), it’s important to retain a
sense of spontaneity in his depiction of the light and atmo-
sphere of the shore. Artist James Bartholomew (on page 24)
has found that a mixed-media approach, using pastel and
watercolor, is perfect for capturing the ocean’s drama and
energy. For Serbian artist Dusan Djukaric (on page 32), it’s
the mood of the scene that comes fi rst, before any details.
Whether it’s the Indian Ocean or the Atlantic, the Black
Sea or the Adriatic, each of these artists off ers a unique
vision of this powerful subject. Th e variety of work illus-
trates an interesting dualism in the nature of water,
which—depending on the body of water, the season, the
weather and the environment—can lead to contrasting
expressions: a quiet serenity in some instances and the
height of drama in others.
As you venture out this summer, I hope you fi nd yourself
in places where you encounter both the contemplative land-
scape and the sweeping vista that takes your breath away,
and that those feelings feed you artistically. WA
