California artist Suhita Shirodkar (suhitasketch.com)
wanted to document the vintage signs in and around San
Jose before they disappeared. Lincoln Avenue Liquor is one of
70 signs she sketched for the project. “I can never resist a great
arrow sign,” says Shirodkar. “I used watercolor and a brush pen,
working to celebrate the rich textures of the dilapidated old sign.
The lone person walking through the scene heightens the sense of
time standing still. When working on location, I try to stay alert
and present so I can capture
something that, though it
might pass through only
briefl y, adds enormously
