“I SUPPOSE THAT PEOPLE ARE MOST UNIQUE IN WHAT

WOULD OTHERWISE BE CALLED THEIR IMPERFECTIONS.

FOR ME, THAT’S WHERE THE BEAUTY LIES.”

Step 5: I push my values harder by going darker in the
shadow shapes of the girl’s hair and the dog’s body. Shapes
remain more important to me than form at this stage, but
understanding the form helps me make decisions about those
shapes. I also slightly adjust my drawing of the dog’s head.
I’m tending toward softer pastels now, including Terry Ludwig,
Great American, Mount Vision, Unison and Sennelier.

Step 6: I introduce more intense color into the fabric of the
girl’s top while being careful to keep it in the shadow value

range. I add more reflected light to the arm and torso, and
work on subtle modeling of the girl’s leg and hip. I add
warmth to the ear to help move the viewer around the figure.
I introduce warm notes in the water to indicate the shallows
and disturbed sand.

Final: I further develop the shapes and form of the dog, and
add subtle weaves of complementary colors into the light and
shadows of the girl’s body to reveal the form and give her skin
a delicate luminosity in Follow the Leader (19x25). PJ
