in trouble. The Victorian
press often reported on
‘terrible discoveries in the
Thames’, such as the day the
police found a ‘set of lungs’
floating under Battersea
Bridge, and twelve hours later
another set at the railway
pier. In 1873 the Thames
Police saved 32 people from
drowning, and ‘prevented’ six
suicides. In total there were
