Tower Bridge looks like a
gateway to a medieval castle
moored in the middle of the
river. Everywhere are boats,
from City cruisers to HMS
Belfast, while a row of buoys
bob in the water like swollen
orange lozenges. There have
been several bridges spanning
this section of the river
reaching back to Roman
times, and when the Victorian
stone-arched bridge opened in
1831 it became the busiest
