Downstream

I’m in the last six as we
head towards the waters of
Millwall Dock. Then off we
go, and I think, it’s easy after
all, it’s just swimming. It
feels a little like being in a
pond, the water is dark and
smells of bracken and when I
open my eyes underneath I
can’t see a thing. I wonder
how deep it is; there’s no
chance I could put my feet
down here and feel mud
between my toes as I did near
