hundred yards full of
drowning people screaming
in anguish and praying for
help’. The captain of a nearby
ship launched a rowing boat
and although he managed to
save eleven people the vessel
was so swamped by crowds
‘shrieking and drowning’ that
‘it was necessary to quench
