picnics, no guards or bell tent.
The scene in the distance is
still industrial, building
cranes and boats, black
smoke in the air, but far less
grim than it would have been
in the 1930s. A clipper boat
passes by; it’s not a paddle
steamer but those on board
are still travelling down the
Thames for pleasure,
although they don’t need to
